“The only source of knowledge is experience.”

In 2018 and 2019 I had the wonderful opportunity to take part in an Oncology training program for nurses in East Africa. A team of US based nurses and nurse practitioners, including myself, created a 12 -week crash course in evidence based Oncology practices. At the end of the course, on site visits were conducted, across 4 hospitals in East Africa, to assess knowledge retention and safe clinical practices. Each nurse in the program also demonstrated proficiency through skills check offs prior to passing and receiving a certification for this course. Results from this project demonstrated a high success rate with blended learning approach in resource-limited countries and provided an opportunity to assess for improvements in policies and procedures at these institutions. At the end of the two year program, the outcomes from this project were submitted and accepted for presentation at the 2019 JADPRO Conference in Seattle, Washington. (poster presentation above) Working along side some of the most hard working nurses in East Africa was definitely an experience I will never forget. It is my hope to continue to educate nurses around the world in whatever capacity they see their careers progressing in. Asante Sana, Kenya!
